BOCAS DEL TORO

Bocas Surf School is lucky to be located in the amazing Bocas del Toro archipelago, home to some of the best waves in Central America.

The Bocas del Toro province extends from the mainland to the island chain. It has some of the largest rainforests in Central America with 9 main islands, 52 cays, and thousands of islets. Bocas del Toro is also home to two national parks: La Amistad International Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, Panama’s first marine park and a nesting ground for hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles.

Over the years Bocas del Toro has gained in popularity, now becoming one of the main travel destinations within not only Panama, but also Central America. Many people attribute its popularity because of the surf. It was surfers and backpackers that were one of the first visitors to this island chain in the 90s. The uncrowded, nameless waves were a secret.

It wasn’t long until professional surfers would visit the Bocas island chain, filming tubes that resembled that of the Maldives and long paradisaical beaches with only their footprints. Within a few years Bocas del Toro would appear in some of the most popular surf magazines and movies around the globe.

LEARN TO SURF IN THE CARIBBEAN

Bocas del Toro is a wonderful place to learn how to surf- we have soft rolling reef breaks and idyllic beach breaks on a secluded white sand beach. Bocas del Toro, being an island chain, provides not only great spots to learn how to surf, but also unbelievable scenery. Some spots are located smack in the middle of various islands.

Surf breaks for beginners vary; there are deep reef breaks that crumble as it breaks providing easy lefts and rights, other waves are almost all sand with a few large rocks off to the side with an easy take off, and others have sandy bottoms and peeling lefts and rights with views of the jungle and long golden sand beach. Depending on the surf conditions the Bocas Surf Team will decide where you should surf.
